Question Mac OS X updates beyond version 10.2.8?

(I checked for this before posting but didn't find anything that helped; perhaps I was using the wrong search terms.... )

I have been unsuccessful in many, many attempts in the past to find any free updates for my Mac OS X 10.2.8

I am wondering if there are any out there because when I try downloading v10.3 or something I run into requirements that the computer does not currently possess.

I would desperately like to update this because other programs like iTunes and messengers cannot be updated unless the OS is updated.

Am I wondering in vain, or no?

The 10.2.x releases of Mac OS X stopped at 10.2.8. To go beyond that (10.3, 10.4, 10.5), you would have to purchase those versions.

The way it works is that the second number, not the first, is actually the major revision number. The third number is the minor revision number denoting patches to the major version. The "10" is just there to signify that it's Mac OS "ten". Yes, Apple makes this redundant and confusing because it decided to call the "X" in "Mac OS X" a roman numeral "ten" instead of just pronouncing it "Mac OS Ecks" (which would have been better, IMO, especially since Mac OS X is a UNIX operating system).

You can pick up a reasonably priced Full Retail Version (linky) of Panther on auction sites such as eBay etc.
