Problem

My dad has a problem (I am not in the same city). Got the message below from him. Anyone have an idea as to what may have happened? Thanks in advance.

I downloaded some pictures from my camera today, and I ran the battery down on the camera when I forgot it was downloading. Ever since that happened, the written labels on some of my desktop stuff has gone to a single letter...... like under the Harddrive icon it just has an "h". Other items may have two or three letters, but not the whole title...... almost all of these are at the top of the screen on the desktop. Wonder what happened and how I can repair it?????? It's hard to tell what the item is with a single letter to identify it.
