upgrade my old mac G4 from OS9 to OSX

I'm trying to upgrade from OS 9.2 to OS 10.3 (with new retail version of Panther OS X 10.3) and on the install screen just after I agree to the license it asks to choose a 'destination volume' but for some reason nothing shows up in the window so I'm unable to choose a volume and continue.....I end up having to press the 'go back' button. I've updated the firmware as well. Does anyone know the fix for this?.....Thanks.

Well, the installation doesn't really get rid of your OS 9 installation. Instead, it uses your OS 9 installation for the Classic environment within OS X....that is, unless you formatted the drive and there's no OS 9 anymore. But I digress.

Have you tried going to the menu up top and selecting "Disk Utility" to see if that sees the drive at all? It should be accessible to you from within the installation. Also, are you sure you're using the latest firmware as is available on this page for your particular G4 Mac?

This happened to me when I installed Panther on top of OS 9.2.2. I chose to erase the HD to maximise space and didn't realise I needed to partition the drive in order for an installation to take place. Once I partitioned the HD using Disc Utility I was good to go ...

You have have a special situation, but it is not generally necessary to partition your hard drive to install MacOS X. Installing MacOS X over MacOS 9 is a simple upgrade.
