External HDD Won't Mount

My machine has stop working after applying the latest security batch from Apple. I keep getting /etc/master.passwd: Invalid argument.

When I boot into single-user mode. I would like to mount my external HD, so I can backup my data, but the diskutil mount command just hangs.

mount -uw /
diskutil mount /dev/"deviceName"

Any ideas would be appreciated.
