Possible hard drive crash HELP!

Hi,
Right, got to work this morning and started my Imac and after a slow initial start up I just got greeted by flashing 'file' and 'question mark'.

I have a 2.1ghz late 2006 Imac.

I have tried using the install discs to boot from but have had no joy, it just comes up with white writing in the top left scrolling down. A technician friend of mine said that was something to do with 'Kernel' info? Any way, it wasn't able to boot from it.

I then tried to use a firewire cable from my laptop to start up and access the hard drive that way, no joy, the hard drive just doesn't appear on the laptop even though it recognises being connect via firewire.

Having spoken with my technical friend again, he suggests that the hard drive has finally give up.

My prob is I have an emergency job to get out which is obviously on the hard drive of the Imac in question, along with quite alot of other work.

I'm not too fussed about the Imac itself, I just want the work from the hard drive.

Is there anything I can do? Anyone in the UK to call?

PLEASE HELP

Boot holding "alt" down. Can you see anything showing on the screen? You should see all bootable systems. If you can find the disk this way, try selecting it.

Boot with single user mode (command + s down at startup). Do you get the lines suggesting the fsck syntax, or something else?

Select 'service' from list and type in your post code for closest service providers http://www.apple.com/uk/buy/locator/

(You could also be lucky and have only the cable connecting the hd faulty)
