MAC 10.5.3 w Mac Mail 3.3/ EMAIL TRASH WILL NOT DELETE!

My Trash in my emails no longer allows files to be put into it. I can not delete anything. The settings in the preferences are correct, but it won't work. You can fiddle with it changing the preferences and it doesn't change.
