iTunes 7.6.2 (9) Distortion on with mp3s

I am having trouble with distortion in iTunes. If I play the file via preview, or QT, they will play fine. Crossfade, soundcheck, sound enhancer are all off, the EQ is also off. I have also found that that bitrate displayed in the pre-import mp3 is 128... After import the bitrate is 172(VBR). If I convert them to aiff, the distortion is carried into the new file.

Lastly there is no volume preset, or EQ preset for the song.

I am lost!

does the problem happen on all mp3s or just some?

have you tried any other speakers/headphones, or playing them in say quicktime or something
