can't send email using Entourage 08

My work uses Microsoft Exchange servers. At work I can send and receive email just fine. When I get home, I can receive, but cannot send. I get an error code of -3260

If I connect to my neighbor's wireless, I can send. I just can't from home. We have Charter Cable as our ISP and I can't seem to get a human for tech support. Any help please?!

That begs the question: Which ISP does your neighbor use?

That you cannot send email from your work account through Charter is not at all surprising. It is common for ISPs to block outgoing mail from outside accounts. In this case, you must use either the ISP's SMTP server or the outside account's webmail client. In your case, you will have to use your firm's Outlook Web Access facility.

i'm not sure i can go over to our neighbor and say "hey, we've been logging onto your wireless . . . "

I finally got ahold of our ISP and then said to put smtp.charter.net in for the outgoing server. I'm not sure if this makes sense, since we're not using any charter.net domain emails? how does the message "know" to go through my work domain if i'm setting the outgoing server to be charter, not work. i tried it and it didn't work.

ahhhh, i'm so frustrated. any other help or suggestions?!

the other option is the ultimatum i gave the person i talked to - email used to work when we had Qwest, now that we are with you it doesn't. why should i remain with you? he said he'd look into my problem, but i'm doubtful . . .

Another question. Is this a laptop that you lug back and forth? Or are you talking about two different machines? If the former, did your work IT guys set up your email? If so, you should tell them what you're trying to do. It's a common problem and they may have an easy solution. (Of course the solution may be a slap on the wrist and orders to use company email only through company systems.)

Back to Qwest. For general email, most (?) ISPs make you authenticate with account name and password. They should have given you simple instructions, when your service started, for their SMTP servers and how to access them.

yes, this is a laptop, but no, it wasn't set up by IT. the outgoing server that works everywhere but my house is "mail.[companyname].org"

they said to change it to charter.net

unless there is some other location i should be doing this (i've tried it in the advanced send settings), i'm at a loss.

my qwest example was just to illustrate that my email used to work just fine with the above settings. now that we're through charter, i'm having problems. probably just being punished for leaving the one company that didn't fork all our private conversations over to bush . . .

Happy, have you heard of Cato the Elder? He was a Roman senator way back when with an annoying habit. At the end of a speech, no matter the subject, he would add: And I further believe that Carthage must be destroyed. He was right, but that doesn't make him any less annoying. His descendants today are posters and letter-to-the-editor writers who feel compelled to conclude any statement, no matter the subject, with the simple-minded charge that George W Bush is behind all the world's problems.

Carthago delenda est!

Why wouldn't using Charter's outgoing mail server make sense to you?

In principle, your choice of incoming and outgoing mail servers are independent of each other. You may use any outgoing server allowed by your ISP.

If you ISP blocks port 25 for SMTP beyond them then consider if the remote server port 587 instead.
