Retrospect Express Not Recognizing Drive

I have Retrospect Express, OSX 10.4 and a Western Digital hard drive. The hard drive is recognized by my MacBook Pro but Retrospect can't find it when I try to my first Back Up. How can I get the two to see each other? Do I need to format the hard drive? If so, how do I do that?
