Mail crashing

I am running OS X 10.4.11 and recently my mail started crashing when I open it. First the system made me reestablish my account, when I did this all my existing email and folders were there but it will not stay up long enough to use it. This has happened before and it stopped crashing when I turned junk filtering off. That is still turned off by the way.
I checked for software updates and the only thing that came up was an iTunes update.
Any ideas?

Run these steps:

1. Write down you ISP mail server settings for SMTP & POP or IMAP.

2. Quit Mail

3. Go to the folder /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/ and delete the file com.apple.mail.plist .

4. Launch Mail and first put in the server settings you wrote down.

5. Try to get Mail. If you have a server problem go to the Mail menu item "window" and select 'Connection Doctor' to see the errors you might be having.
