    router or software firewall?

I am about to get a DSL connection. I have one computer (G4). Do I need a router for protection or will a software firewall be sufficient? Any recommendations for shareware software firewall? Is Norton Personal firewall good?

Use OS X's built in software firewall. Download sunShield from versiontracker.com to get a GUI Preference Pane for it so you don't have to screw around with the terminal.

I concur with cabbage, you really shouldn't bother paying for a hardware router unless you've got more than one computer.

The built-in firewall (ipfw) is just great; I'm not such a fan of Norton
