Folder chaged to executable file

A few of my data folders that housed pictures, word docs and pdfs, changed from folders to executable folders can anyone explain why and how to change them back?

Launch /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utiltiy and "Repair Permissions" on the drive. It will take a while so go get something to drink while you wait.
