Video Chat Problems

I'm brand new to the site and to Apple in general, so this could have been answered already but I have had problems with iChat. Every time I use the video chat, it freezes after a few minutes of use. When I try to escape the screen of the frozen face, the entire program freezes and I have to Force Quit. I don't use a router, can it simply be internet connection?
