Hi Ollie
Use Disk Utility (from install disc Utilities, or Applications/Utilities from a system disc) and format the drive first to Mac OS journaled extended, HFS+.
Is that hard drive installed internally on your Mac?

What Mac do you have?
Could it have a connector not fully connected?

It would have to be seen by the system, install disc, or disk utility in order it to be installed. If the drive is not formatted at all, it would be usually be formatted first. But if there is an unformatted disk, the installer should be able to suggest you that it is unformatted.
So it looks like the connectors may not be properly seated.
