Syncing iCal & gCal: is there a disadvantage?

One someone confirm that you CAN sync iCal and gCal without a third-party add-on but the sync-ing will not work on subcalendars. Just one calendar. Is this correct? I am still having trouble getting it to sync more than one calendar. If anyone can sync more than one iCal calendar, can they email me how they did it? Thanks!

P.S. I am using 10.5.5.
