Angry Modem and reboot

I seem to be having a problem with my modem lately. It is always hanging up and acting very slow. How can one tell if the modem is the prob or the ISP?

Also, everytime I reboot either by menu or startup disk, it boots to a blank gray screen. I then need to hit the power button, let it wind down and then starts up fine.

You can find the logfiles for dial-up networking, and check those to see why the connection was closed.
Open Internet Connect, then select Window -> Connection Log.

Copy and paste what it actually says in the log at the time of the dropout, please. :-) It sounds a little like it might be an ISP problem, but we'd need to see the log entry to tell for sure.

Also, why are you rebooting? Does the modem stop working after the dropout, or does the system freeze, or what?

The "Terminating on Signal 15" seems consistent with my logs for a normal log-off. However I can't see the Hangup (SIGHUP) message in my logs, so I'd assume you are being hung up on from the other end.

If you have call waiting on your phone line, make sure you have it turned off, as this might disrupt your modem connection.

dedicated line

This is a separate dedicated line to my office. My ISP says maybe I should update drivers, software, etc. HUMPFFFF!

Another odd thing with the blank screen. I removed video card completely. Tried rebooting 6 times to a gray screen. tried to start up from norton. no good. ran hardware tests all ok. Finally got to boot from norton. norton gave warning that computer date was
December 31, 1969.

What gives?
