Question Recover L3 cache from 16/64 horror

Hi,

According to Mac Hardware Test
L3 cache of Quicksilver 1ghz DP seems to fail in some way (Post 16/64)
causing my G4 to hang before finishing boot process.

My questions:

- Does this occur on 1 of 2 processors or both?
The test gives no clue as to which processor causes problems

- Can I resolve this myself?
Maybe by removing the faulted processor, ordisabling/bypassing L3 cache

- If not, which part do I need to replace?
Hopefully not the entire logic board..?

Thanks for your help!

If I remember correctly, the L3 cache on that processor is shared between the processors... I think.

The L3 cache itself would be off-chip, but on board, meaning the L3 cache chip(s) would be on the same daughtercard/processor board as the processors themselves.

If the L3 cache chip is truly fried, I think you're looking at a whole processor daughtercard/board replacement.

Offchip / onboard... would mean I can pry off the L3 chip(s) and install new ones, right?

I haven't removed the heat sink yet, but if the cache really is fried I suppose I'd notice...

Sure, I guess, in theory you should be able to do that.

But that's beyond my expertise. I only had two semesters of electrical engineering, which isn't enough to say for sure or not whether that's possible or what needs to be done.
