| OCR software for Canon 8400f
I have a Canon 8400f scanner for my G4 computer. It uses Omniscan Se for OCR. I am moving to an Intel Mac and this OCR software does not run on Intel Macs. Canon is no help. Have others found any inexpensive OCR software that will run on an Intel Mac? The scanner only cost about $120.00. What is the point in spending money like this on OCR software when one can buy a new scanner with OCR software for this price?

If you're using Mac OS X on your G4, then Omniscan SE should work on your new Intel Mac -- even though it's not "Intel native." If it's for PowerPC-based Macintoshes only, then it should run on Intel-based Macintosh computers under the Rosetta translation software... this is automatic and transparent to the user, so there's nothing you need to do. Is there something specific about the software that prevents it from running on Intel-based Macintosh computers?

You appear to be confusing issues. Whatever you paid for it, you bought a scanner to scan images. The manufacturer threw in OmniPage SE OCR software as a convenience to its customers. Those who have serious OCR needs upgrade to OmniPage Pro X for Macintosh or Readiris Pro 11. If you want something less expensive than good software, then you may try PDFpen or PDFpenPro. Be warned, however. Some user reviews claim that it crashes on their machines. That said, no one is forcing you to buy a new computer. No one is forcing you to get rid of your old computer if you buy a new one. It would be nice if Nuance provided an update for the OmniPage SE package or if it provided an Intel-compatible version. The bottomline is that no one is forcing you to abandon your current working version of OmniPage SE. I assume that you want to install Windows on your new Intel-based Mac. OCR software for Windows shipped with your scanner. You still have to option of installing Windows and then using that OS to OCR your scanned documents. |

It has very mixed reviews. Most people do not like it.

MisterMe: I don't want to get into a debate about why one changes or updates computers. I am sure there are many people with Canon scanners with the same problem. Some will just go out and buy a new scanner for $100.00 rather than pay $500.00 for new scanner software. If I wanted to run the scanner under Windows I would have bought a $1000.00 Xp or Vista computer rather than a $2000.00 Mac. I think we are seeing another example of Mac marginalization. |

Iris has a promo for ReadIris for $59.95. I purchased it. IKt works fine except if you scan one document after another when it unexpectedly quits.
