Are you logged in as katharine while you are trying to access katharin's files? The prompt shows katharine, the user details katharin.
drwx------ or drwx------+ is the correct permissions for the Desktop...
Did you try these? My Desktop Is Locked!!!!! Help!!!! Please!!!

The + sign should not show up on 10.3.x, I believe, because that's the ACL representation in 10.5, isn't it?

Or anywhere where you enabled ACL manually (I did that on 10.4..)

So... the current guess would be that the user changed her shortname accidentally/intentionally and is having problems now - or that there are actually two user folders, one named katharine and one katharin?

- the Desktop is owned by admin, and not katherin(e)
You need to change the ownership of that Desktop folder.

We had a similar thread here a while ago (2006) where the user also ran Panther and saw the exact error message as you:

My Desktop Is Locked!!!!! Help!!!! Please!!!

The advice that was given involved some Terminal coding and although it didn't appear to resolve the issue ... after the OP simply created a New Folder on the Desktop it was apparent that the issue had been rectified and the permissions appeased ....
