rht4162 is on a distinguished road
hooking up a used airport extreme

ok this is my first post and i was unsure of where i go to introduce myself so im doing it here and coupling it with the purpose of registering.

i have been a mac addict since birth and have always used them, untill now i have had my macbook pro attached to ethernet cable for internet but i just got a used airport extreme from my pops, its the classic one not the new one, its kinda dome shape, or UFO or however it is described. anyway i dont have the CD so is there any way i can put it with the ethernet cable so i can have wireless? and if so how? because i have been trying with the airport utility app but have yet to succeed.

any and all help is apreciated, and happy to be part of this forum.

EDIT: i have got it to show up under wireless networks, now i just cant get any internet through it.

Well this first thing you have to do is decided if this will being doing the NAT or is sitting behind a NAT. I say this because you will have problems if the wireless sits behind a wired router. I do it this way and using /Applications/Utilities/AirPort Utility and setting the Connection settings (in the Internet tab) and turn "Connection Sharing" off "Bridge Mode". This way my wired router is doing the NAT and the Airport Extreme is just broadcasting IPs for it (for my wireless devices).

So if you connect to it launch /Applications/Utilities/AirPort Utility and set the setting there, only is it sits behind a main router. Plus since it is an older Airport Extreme ask yourself what kind of wireless & wireless security (b or g) you can use.

Note: If this Extreme is less than three years old make sure you are using at least CAT5E cable connecting it up.
