If its an unprotected dvd, say one you edited from home movies and made in iDVD, then you can just copy the files to the HD then use toast to burn it as a DVD (UDF format I think).

If its a protected dvd then this will not work, and I would think discussing it would break the 'legal discussion only' rule.

If they are commercial DVDs--stuff like Debbie Does Des Moines--than I do not believe there is any legal way you can "rip" it to your HD.

I think if you own them, you are entitled to copy them to your computer!

"Entitled" does not mean "legal." I feel entitled to be Nicole Kidman's Official Snuggle-Bunny, but the restraining order suggests otherwise.

However, I am willing to have it demonstrated that it is legal to do that in the United States--where this webpage is hosted.

I don't think you are allowed to do that as the process of doing so involves decrypting the dvd from its protected format, and than itself is not legal I think.
