black macbook update problems?

I was recently trying to download the new Safari 4 beta onto my 2.2 ghz black macbook, running leopard 10.5.2. when I downloaded it, it said i needed the 10.5.6 update. I tried installing it and the other items in my software update, but i get numerous errors. for one, installing a quicktime update, i get a red exclamation point on the hard drive i want to install it on, and it told me that the drive did not meet the requirements for the update. this has happened for a lot of updates, meaning that nothing new can be installed.

Also, as a side note, some of the preference panes in some applications, such as safari and mail, have lost the bar along the top to chose different preference categories. don't know if this is related or not, but just thought i would mention it.

Any suggestions???

Did you update over the internet or download the ComboUpdate?

I have tried both, and both lea to similar results. I believe that the combo update had the red exclamation point on my hard drive, and using the software update over the internet, it gave me some error messages that i cannot recall at the moment.
