Question Any easy way to monitor changes to a folder?...

I am trying to find an easy way to monitor several folders for any changes.

I know there are specific programs (like Acrobat Distiller) where I've seen this done for a specific purpose. But I don't know of just a general way to keep a log or give an alert when a specific folder or set of folders contents is modified.

This would just need to show simple things like a file being added or subtracted or updated. I am working on various projects across a network and it would be handy to have something like this.

Thanks.

I don't think it offers alerts or logs, but fseventer will show you all changes to your file system in real time.

Hmmm, ok that looks pretty cool.

However, it looks like it just monitors changes I make to my own file system. It doesn't monitor specific folders that I set to see if other users are making changes to those folders.

That's what I'm really going for. Thanks for the suggestion though. Unless you know something else about this program that can help me...

Anyone else have any suggestions on this?..

Seems like a simple problem. I do not write scripts particularly, I deal mostly in graphics, though it seems someone could probably have already written a script to do this.

One tip I found was if you Ctrl click on any folder you can attach a 'folder action' to it. There's a simple 'add - new item alert.scpt' action which alerts you to items being added to the folder. Not totally what I was looking for.

There's also a program called File Monitor which allows you to monitor more than one folder at a time but again, the alert system is very simplistic. And doesn't tell you what file changed and it doesn't monitor any sub-folders within a folder without individually selecting them. Ideally there would be some kind of logging method, as well.
