Bonjour and iChat

I'm in high school and me and my friend try to instant message during class but the school blocks the internet and we can't get the password. We heard of a thing called bonjour for ichat but when we try and use it, we can't find each other's computers. How do we get it to work?

You both have to be in the same subnet. That means look at your IP and have him take a look at his IP, are they similar except for the last number set? This will mean you are in the subnet network and this will be able to use Leopard's "Shared" Finder sidebar.

You can't. If there is not a Wi-Fi signal from a nearby restaurant that you can use, then there is no way around the need for the password.

You could create an ad-hoc network just between your two computers.

From the AirPort menu, one of you should select "Create Network..." Then, the other user can connect to the network created by the first user.

This will allow you to talk to each other over Bonjour. If there are other computers that would like to join and chat, they can also do so.
