iBook g4 video problem

I've created a monster...
My iBook g4 has acted as a HTPC for a while now, and the other day I took it a step further. I removed the display, extracted the wifi antennas from it, and put them back in the iBook body (safely attached outside as not to cause problems) It still works, boots fine, runs fine, I just use a little VGA dongle out the side to connect it to my projector/monitor.
(by the way running OS X 10.4.11)
Here's the thing, the Display preference pane tells me there are two connected displays, it sees "VGA Display" that I assume is what it thinks the internal video connector is, but it's max resolution only goes up to 800x600, which is still wrong because there clearly isn't an internal VGA Display anymore. Then it tells me about my other VGA Display, and it reports verbatim the exact resolutions and refresh rates supported by my projector. The thing is...when I set my external VGA Display to 1280x1024@75Hz (it's a weird projector, this is it's native setting, i've been using it like this for ages) the resolution doesn't actually change, it acts like it changed something, but the resolution is still 800x600.

It should be noted that, even though there is no open I can find for this, the two displays are mirrored, which explains (sort of) when I set the external video to anything, it just mirrors the primary VGA Display.


Here's what I'd like:

I'd like to remove the internal VGA display entirely, so it only ever delt with the external VGA display, that would make my life much easier.

If that can not be done for whatever reason, I could manage by using the external display and an extended desktop, which should then work at whatever resolution I set it to.


How can I make this happen? thanks

I've been snooping around preference files in Terminal/nano for a while, I haven't found anything yet.

I too have a Frankenstein HTPC, an old driven over 17" G4 PB without display and it too shows the nonexistent LCD, being a PBG4 it had the option to disable mirroring your iBook does not it can only mirror. There was a hack to enable the extend desktop on Apple's whiteware-
