multiple personality MPB1,1 on some OS

    Hi,

I was reading this thread that I think would address my problem, but it's closed now.
Munix hacked? Valid files for install of Leopard?

PMed a User there, but in case he ignores me, I thought I should squeeze into your queue anyway.

Can't start a new thread but I don't know what question to ask, or what the main problem is (other than the fact that I even dared to launch the Terminal). For this same reason I'm scared now to even random stuff in other topics, since that's what got me in trouble in the first place. In any case, this should be a good laugh at least.

After my misadventures with the Terminal, I find discover I encounter all styles of blinking StartUp icons until my mac finally gives up. I recovered somehow, although even though it's alive and very responsive, it just isn't what it used to be.

    --------------
Would it be possible to for me to unknowingly hack my own computer, and accidentally cause a rootkit type situation?
    --------------

I messed it up. It is so weird now.
Disk Warrior couldn't fix it. Stellar Apps hang twhile trying to fix it.

I have erased, reformatted, zeroed, and repaired my disk, reset nvram, zapped pram, restored, ran HW tests, removed extra ram, archive/erase installed with original Tiger DVDs countless times. I go to Apple and they send me home with Leopard. No help. Apple then does installation for me 3 seperate times. Still the same. Unfortunately, I don't think that the Sales/Tech folks at my local Apple retailer were trained to do what I attempted with the Terminal.

Somewhere in Apple's kb, they said to remove /etc/rc.cdrom and /System/Installation/CDIS and /Applications/Utilities/StartUp.app
But I can't find or can't reach these files except for when the installer is in the drive.

The only thing I've read about that I haven't tried is

--- Is it normal for a mac to act as a server with itself as a client? Then mistake itself as an Airport Disk or Diskless Storage Device or whatever? Even when I don't have an airport base station or a .Mac account?

--- Fresh DVD installs are never really fresh. And booting from the DVD after a "successful" install always gives me an option to update what I had just installed. It's as if only some files got the Leo update. Settings don't stick. The System Prefs App for example, looks like a mix of Tiger and Leopard panes.

--- Installer logs show user OSInstall working under locahost. Also other users show like unknown, runner, etc... Plus a log that just says stuff about Native Install Complete. (log file excepts and dmesg results at end of message if you wanna see)

--- LOTS of installer scripts with "plans". They keep moving files around as well as mess with the Receipts folder. It does have the BSD.pkg, but it's size is always 0 bytes.

--- I have no Bonjour services at all. All Directory Utility shows are editable Active Directory, LDAP3 services, but Local, BSD Flat File/NIS are grayed out even for root. Nothing in Dir Servers or Mounts tab. Browsing for servers with the Finder or DirU yields nothing.

--- Startup mostly goes goes like this: blank light grey bg, then logo, then spinning gray things, then blue bg, quickly changing to 2 different shades of blue, starting up window and bar, aurora bg, then login window with ugly fonts. Like it's overlapped. clicking login sort of makes it look like there really is more than 1 window, because the graphics (progress bar for instance) split, like one window is slower than the other.

--- Safe Boot colors are lighter. Fonts look normal. Most obvious with the apple menu.

--- CoreServices folder is filled with old apps with generic icons. Also has some bundles and unix executables

--- Shared in the Side Panel sometimes show other computers in my house. Even my mac appeared in the list once. I tried to connect and then saw aliases to my current boot volume plus other old external drives. Clicking made them disappear.

--- PC a pc connected to the same same router as i am has my Mac listed in some folder and says I'm a Windows NT server...

--- At times, even with Airport OFF, and service itself set as inactive, I'd be able to go online. But trying to turn Airport ON never works. Still, I'm connected.

--- stuff on ActMonitor & Console apps. spawns, mcx, javavm, samba, ruby gems, rails, ppp, etc... And there are 2 system.log files.

--- System>Library>Launch Daemons has a shitload of plists except for launchd. Groups file is full of usernames prefixed with a _

--- Pretty much everything has custom access. Even when Get Info on Volumes and Users folders show 2009 creation, Desktop, System, Users and Applications Folders all have 2007 creation date.

--- Right click on Desktop, Volumes, any file really, gives me an option (under More...) to send whatever to a Bluetooth Device which I think is this:
    Outgoing Serial Ports:
    Serial Port 1:
    Address:
    Name: Bluetooth-Modem
    RFCOMM Channel: 0
    Requires Authentication: No

--- First window opened when Apple Terminal is launched, it says last login is from console. New windows will say ttys000 etc...
    Code:
Last login: Tue Mar 31 08:59:20 on console
    mikada:~ mikaela$
--- printenv in single user says that TERM=vt100
--- printenv in the terminal says TERM=xterm-color

--- a simple man command will sometimes appear in Activity monitor with login, bash, less, groff, and sh shows up in the group around 3 or 4 times.

This isn't a simple Tiger-Leopard permissions thing, is it?
    Is this root suid jail?
Or did I indeed create my very own rootkit environment?

We don't have genius bars here, which is good I guess, because i'd probably get kicked out of the store when they see this part in all my Crash Reporter Reports:

Red face double post and more questions

this thread showed up twice. so i closed the other. haven't posted anything in the forums prior to this message here.

so i'm guessing tech support probably forwarded the dup by mistake
if not them, then my mac, for sure has personality issues.
although, i could have posted the copy myself!

might have somehow started the other thread without knowing what i was doing... just like I have no idea how I managed to mess up my mac.

seriously tho, i didn't post them. i'm off now to figure out how to delete the other thread as i'd prefer to not be tagged as an impatient dup-topic-sending noob . if anyone can get rid of the offending double, then please, do so before i end up doing more stuff unknowingly.

see? i really do need help.

Update: i have not done anything since, except check these in the terminal. If checking bless and dmesg info, and peeking into /dev using ls is meant for more than showing information, then i messed up again.

Could all this be a blessed file or vol or dir problem? Is this why regardless of how many times I erase/zero out data, reformat disk, reset pram, smc, vram, or reinstall, I end up with the same stubborn Network and pref settings, extentions, generic app icons, etc....?

Am I just booting from the wrong volume? At the wrong mount point or device? Sleep or swap issues? Or has the x86 stuff crippled the mac for good?

dmesg results have changed to this:

Last time i looked in here (didn't do anything other than ls), the list started with the bpf stuff. when I googled bpf, it mentions Berkeley Packet Filter and pseudo-device bpf stuff. What are those?

Now the dev folder has ath0 and autofs stuff on top. Does that even matter?

Much of what you list, seems normal and ordinary with a standard OS X install. Most do not seem to indicate any sort of problem, anyway.... Someone else who wades through your post might have a different opinion, but I don't think so.
If you could boil down your situation to a few words, would you say that you can't boot to the system that you install? Or, would you phrase that differently?

You also didn't mention anything about when your problem started, and how all this affects your use of your MacBook Pro....

I think you seem most concerned about how the hard drive erases, so you could replace the hard drive, and be done with that as a possible issue.
Serendipity is a lucky guess !

Would you phrase it differently? I might. And I have. Coz I don't really know what's going on. All I know is that my mac feels different. And that I get angry whenever I'm told I cannot open my files and apps.

That sounds about right. Every time I start and login, (both the original admin account and a separate user account), things just aren't as I left them.

PrefPanes for instance, would sometimes open with missing buttons/items that should be there. Keyboard Tab missing the Illuminate kb in Low Light part, or checking the button to use standard Fn keys would have the opposite effect. Accounts Tab will be totally blank. Airport prefs never stick. And Airport icon on the apple menu never stops scanning (that part I'm not sure is wrong, but it's still weird...)

As you mentioned, I considered that all this is normal. And I'm being paranoid.
But I've since trashed that theory. See, I took my mac with me to meet a client, I launch Illustrator as I've done a million times, then get a message that I can't use it, stuff about my license, and I should contact my Network Administrator. What's that mean? I launch my other, Adobe apps, which were installed all at one time, they all work. Reinstalled and ai works again. Scared tho that disconnecting from my home network would trigger another episode like that, and i miss deadlines again. So now I'm afraid to take my portable out of the house.

You also didn't mention anything about when your problem started
Started with airport dropping signals every 2 seconds or so. When nothing in apple support worked, I googled it. Then I fire up the terminal. Following random How-Tos that i thought would help.

ifconfig, maps, forwarding, firewalls, tunnels, interfaces, etc.... Some probably meant for macs, some for sure, were not. Like x86? I see that all the time in my crash reports. Pretty much everything I've read said Do Not Install on a Real Mac.

How I managed to get x86 to be at the root of all crashes, I'm not sure. How to get rid of that and how to undo all the other stuff, no clue. So I don't really have anything helpful to say. I saved a lot of log files and reports tho, except I don't know what they mean. :-)

After this tho, it's probably safe to say that things are not as they should be.

Your common observation seems to be references to x86 in various system logs, etc. Those are parts of the hardware drivers on your Intel Mac, so crash logs, etc, would often reference those types of files as part of the report. Those references, by themselves, do not indicate that something has somehow traveled into your system. They are already there as part of the support files for the various hardware in your Mac.... As your Mac's OS X system runs on top of Unix, you may see unix-ey looking icons and files occasionally.
    Back to the task -

Do you have the variety of problems (system prefs, crashing, etc.) when you log out, then log back in as a different user? Create a new fresh user just for this purpose....
Serendipity is a lucky guess !

same i killed my mac issues + Finder and Adobe questions

yes, missing prefs options/tabs would happen at random, regardless of whether or not i logged i as the original admin user from when i installed the os, or a new non admin user.

But what is up with the Version Information shown in that last screenshot from the finder's column view of Photoshop?

I am sure I've never seen that before. I've been using adobe apps forever and seeing that was really strange. Still is that way now. All other adobe apps say version 13.

Also, when i do Export Paths to Illustrator from Photoshop, the resulting file is a Plain Text file. Any ideas why this would happen?

    ~m

P.S. Just checking, is this what 10.5's Finder shows normally?

Media selections in the sidebar only show up in open and save dialog windows. They're not seen in a standard Finder window.
Different type of windows may show you different info, because of the use of that window....

I don't know anything about Adobe apps. What is supposed to be the result when you export a path? Seems like it would be a text file of some kind....

Your question about the Photoshop info window is a little vague, I think.
But, I also have Photoshop CS3, and my info window is virtually identical to yours - although my version text has another couple of lines. It works, so not an issue for me.... I never noticed it before.
What brought that to your attention?
Serendipity is a lucky guess !

version info used to only show regular numbers.
    like 10.4.11 or version 11.
    never saw these numbers before.

with regard to the comment about exporting paths from psd to ai, that would normally result to a file that i can open and edit in ai. now though, it exports as e text file that gives a file not recognized error when i open it.
