First of all, you need to make some space on your hard drive by deleting some things, or moving large files to an external, etc. Once you have space available, try a rebuild of your library like this: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2042?viewlocale=en_US

You may want to permanently move your iTunes and/or your iPhoto libraries to the external and just access them from there -- saves a lot of space on your internal. To do that, read these: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1229 and/or http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1449?viewlocale=en_US

Good luck!
