HOWTO: seperate a network into "groups"

Hi

a "PC" friend of mine asked if a MAC network can be split into what he called "workgroups" so that certain machines can only see certain other machines on a network.

Im sure this can be done, but I've never had to setup a network like this before.

Does anyone know if and how it can be done?
