Major error

So, long story short, a few years ago, a friend was getting rid of her ibook g4, what I believe to be a leopard.

it was in kinda cruddy shape and she didn't have the OS disc. she asked if I wanted it. Of course I said sure. (She's got money to throw away).


well, last year it froze. And.... After a restart, it never worked again.

Instead, it boots up like it always did. Except, when it shows the percentage bar, it goes by incredibly fast. Like, within 10 seconds. then, it turns blue.

Next, a black screen comes up:

December 31 18:34:01 Stephanies-iBook-G4 getty: /dev/console: Operation not supported by device

Then, it goes back to blue, then balck with the error. It does this infinitely.


I have no idea what to do. Please help.

Do you have an installation DVD at all? I'm guessing you probably haven't, if you mention your friend didn't have one for you.

If that's the case, you could try fsck from single user mode. Have a look at: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1417

The gist is: restart the computer, hold down Command-S while booting, you should see a screen full of text, type "/sbin/fsck -fy" at the prompt (without the quotation marks) and press Return, and, when it is finished, type "reboot" and press Return.

Another idea would be to verify disk permissions, but try the above first.

The volume Macintosh HD appears to be OK.


I'll try repairing permissions.

A quick side note, some things once booted in SU mode stand out to me. "CSRHIDTransitionDriver: robe: -s
CSRHIDTransitionDriver: robe booting in single user .. do not match
ApplePMU: :CLOCK RESET! PMU WAS PROBABLY RESET SOMEHOW!"


Anyway, after I used sbin/fsck -fy , I rebooted. (Typed reboot).

Booted into SU and then typed "sudo diskutil repairPermissions /"

and nothing happens. I'm doing this wrong, aren't I?
