iDVD transfer from one mac to another

I had to wipe my hard drive and reinstall Panther (i know...hold the laughter). I bought Leopard to be able to use FCP 6...however my iDVD application won't open (was too old of a version...2.0 something)...so i dragged and dropped the newer 6.0.4 from my laptop (running tiger) to my desktop (the one with Leopard) but I can't open it. It asks to locate the templates...which i copy from Library>App Support>iDVD>yadda yadda yadda. But leaving the finder window open after copying the templates and trying to reopen iDVD on the desktop, the template files dissipate before my eyes! I tried to set the permission so everyone can read and write them, but still they disappear. How can I get my iDVD back on my desktop without buying iLife or DVD studio pro? I just make simple DVDs for my clients and don't want to buy anything extra and don't want to switch to my laptop every time i need to make a DVD. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
