| Web pages won't load
I have a MacBook Pro with OS X 10.5.6 I connect to the internet with an ethernet cable direct into the wall. When I open the network connection box, it says the ethernet is connected, but it will not load any web pages. Friday I was using it fine and then got off. Came back a bit later and could no longer connect to any pages. I have spoken to my internet provider and they say my settings are fine. I am online on my desktop that connects using the same ethernet cable. I am not having any trouble connecting on it. I went and bought a new ethernet cable, just in case it was the problem, but that didn't help. I don't know too much about what I am doing and am very frustrated at this point. Any help would be much appeciated.

Yes we move the back and forth depending on which one we want to connect on. The internet connection is dsl.

If you are connecting straight from the modem you need to reset the modem each time you connect it to a new device. The reason your desktop connects now and not your macbook pro is because the modem has assigned the ip address to the MAC address of the desktop. So then you plug in your macbook pro without resetting the modem, the modem sees a different MAC address and will assign the computer an ip address but won't grant it access. So if your going to continue on this way you have to reset the modem when plugging it in to another computer. I suggest just spring for a router and plug the computers into it and save yourself the headache.

I do not have an external modem, we connect direct into the wall. I have been connecting this way for more than a year and am just now having an issue. No matter how much I reset, the lap top will still not connect. While on the phone with my provider, they reset the ip addy, etc. but it still won't connect.

I really need to figure this out, so I guess I am going to go get a router. I live in the sticks and it is a long drive to town. I can't afford a router right now either, but I am going to do it anyway because I need this fixed. Technology is giving me a hard time this week. Cell phone sim card fried, can't get on line with lap top, desk top won't print the stuff I need, etc. etc

How do you have DSL and no modem? If you are plugging into the wall, that should be dial-up you are on?

I am pretty sure it is broadband dsl. I do not have to have a modem and it stays connected all the time. I am back from getting the router and will see if it works later today.
