Mac OSX 10.4 - booting in Darwin, help??!

Hey guys,

So I think I know what the problem is, but I just need to know how to fix it

I changed the permission of my macintosh hd disk to system, and I must have messed up one, because it auto went out to darwin.
I have an admin account I can log in to darwin, but beyond that I am really clueless about what to do. I've tried to 'reboot' but that doesn't work.

Any help would be appreciated immensely! I will provide quick and thorough info, as I'm definitely under the gun with this one!!

also, i cannot locate a mac osx disk, as i was thinking of just trying to boot from there and repair permissions or something. not sure if that would have worked, because the permissions aren't broken, they're just wrong.

If you hold the shift key while turning on, does it boot in "safe mode". If so, you could run disk utility.
