Java .jnlp will not launch from browser

When I click on a .jnlp application it downloads the XML file to my downloads folder.

I can then launch it from a terminal running:

javaws filename.jnlp

How do I get it to launch automatically from Safari or Firefox. I need Firefox to work because the application is currently not supported under Safari 4.

I run .jnlp apps by simply double-clicking them.
