dvd freezes when I try to play

My MBP will sometimes reject dvds that I try to play on it. This doesn't happen all the time... just about half. it will freeze Dvd Player until I force quit that program and can eject the dvd. These are new store-bought dvds and have no scratches or dirt on them. I am a broke college student, and my MBP is out of warrenty, so if there is anything that I can do to help that is free, I would really appreciate it. please help!
