kernel panic repeatedly after system froze during SL install

Every time I boot up, the computer goes immediately to this screen:

In short, I was running leopard, and installed 10.6. Caused problems with Word and system fonts, so I called Applecare, who were of no help and basically told me to contact Microsoft to get the problem fixed. I decided just to do an Archive and Install of 10.5, so that I'd at least have my working system back and in order. Did that, and was going through and drag/dropping folders from the "Previous Systems" folder into my new one on the recently installed 10.5 setup, and the computer froze while some of the library files were transferring. I powered down, and it KP's after time I attempt to turn it back on.

Hopeless?
Thanks a ton.

Doctor X will become famous soon enough
1. Apple Care is generally useless in that fashion.
2. M$ has, apparently, a problem with fonts. After searching online, one site recommended opening Font Book and discarding any "bad" fonts. This I did . . . voila!. Also make sure you have the latest update of, I assume, Office 2008.

But this does not help you! I HOPE you back your data up to an Ex-HD. If you do not then retify this error in judgment, character, and musical tastes NOW.

I will wait.

. . .

. . .

"Tell me my life's about to begin! Tell me I'm a hero!"

. . .

You back? Good! Nothing solves "Frelled Beyond All Hope" like a simple back up from an inexpensive Ex-HD. When you fix the problem, you will back up your system. In fact, you will partition the Ex-HD and back up your 10.5 AND 10.6! Any you will be happy and cease buying Hanna Montana albums!

Now, to me, "Kernal Panic" usually means a hardware failure, but I SUSPECT you have had a problem with frelling your System. So, I think you have no choice if you do NOT have your data back to boot on your Installation Disks and try to repair what you can. Otherwise Archive and Install again, BACK UP your data, and start over.

IF you have DiskWarrior--which is STILL very useful--that might fix things or at least make a copy of your disk to save data. TechTools also works but it just does not fix things the way DW can. However, in the future, with a clone of your drive you will avoid such problems.

Hope this helps!

That pretty much explains it. Only really experienced Mac users/techs should be dragging and dropping library files and really only in the users/youruser/library folder. Why would you need anything out of the previous systems folders library anyway? Anything that was needed should have came across just fine through the archive & install provided it was successful to which it was until you started dragging and dropping.

thanks for the help guys, I really appreciate it

basically I ended up having to boot from dvd, partition the hd, and then drag user files over. trying to drag as little from the lib as possible, but some things (like firefox bookmarks, address book contacts etc) I don't know any other way of doing things. But then.... a challenger appears

New Problem:

As I said, I partitioned, installed 10.5 on new partition, and dragged all my stuff over (and then onto a TB that I went and purchased because I never want to have to deal with this again haha.) Got everything backed up, and went ahead and deleted the "original" partition, so that I'd have my full hard drive with 10.5 on it. Problem is, disk utility seemingly isn't letting me make the "new" partition back to the full size....... any ideas?

Am I missing something?
