startup problems with powerbook g4

Alright so I know the computer is outdated, but I'm a poor college kid who refused to buy a pc.
So I have a 15" powerbook G4 aluminium with leopard 10.5.8 installed as my OS.
Everything was going fine until a few days ago I stated getting this odd screen whenever I opened safari that froze my computer and forced me to shut down my computer. Now It won't even turn on I hit the power button and I get the grey screen with the flashing folder in the middle that flashes a question mark and the little apple face. please help!!! I've tried zapping the ram which was unseccessful. Does anyone have any ideas that won't leave me without groceries for a few weeks?

Ryan

Sounds like you need a hard drive. Boot to your Leopard installer and go to disk utility to see if the drive is even showing up.

Would it be possible to use an external hard drive to do this?
