| New Mac user needs help (as usual?)
I need to migrate files. I have the Mac and PC connected with cat6 cable. I am at connect to server (on the PC, ipconfig says my autoconfiguration ip address is 169.244.16.32), is this the ip the mac wants?I thought the computers ip was 192.168.1.100. Any way, neither works. |

You'll get 169 IPs when there is no actual DHCP network set up. However, if file sharing is active on the PC and you're running Leopard or Snow Leopard on the Mac, you should see the PC's name in the Shared section of a Finder window sidebar. That's where you can connect to the PC and retrieve your files.

Is you CAT6 cable a crossover cable or does are the computers connected through a router? I don't think you can network without one of those. Can you just transfer files using a USB flash drive? I know it might take a while, but it makes the transfer process quite simple.

Crossover or not doesn't matter. For almost 10 years, Macs have been able to electronically switch to crossover when they sense a connection to another computer instead of a network device.

Might want to have a look at this.

But then why couldn't my iBook and my iMac G3 network with a standard ethernet cable?

| Well I'm pretty sure that is only the new macs because I had to use a crossover when I connected my PowerBook 1400 to my eMac in 2003.
