Unhappy Random Kernel Panics on PowerMac G5! Help!

Hello - new to this forum, and I hope someone can help me resolve a problem I've been recently having with my PowerMac G5.

It all started when I installed some an additional 2GB of RAM (bought from Crucial, which is always very good and reliable) to add to my existing 2GB of Apple RAM, and soon afterwards, found the Mac crashing with the 'grey veil of death' happening quite a lot.

I ran Memtest several times, which showed n problem with the RAM, but I removed it anyway, to see if it was that which was causing it, and the Mac still keeps crashing with either a grey veil of death, or just a total freezeup, requiring a hard-reboot.

I have tried everything - removing all attached devices, resetting the PRAM, pressing the little reset button on the logic board, removing the battery and unplugging the Mac for a day, swapping the Apple RAM (which has always been fine) into different slots.... nothing seems to work.

At the weekend, the Mac wouldn't even boot up, and kept turning itself off during startup after in the grey screen with the Apple logo and spinning radar-wheel.

I got it to boot up OK from an external firewire drive I have, but Disk Utility said it couldn't fix the drive and Diskwarrior also said it was irreparable.

I did manage to get Techtool to repair it though, which took about 9 hours but it did successfully rebuild the volume structure and the Mac would then boot up fine and all seemed ok, but it still crashes randomly and for no apparent reason.

I never did put the new RAM back into the machine so it's all as it was before all this trouble started, and I have no devices attached to the Mac anymore, except the original Apple keyboard and mouse (which I don't normally use, but my wireless one doesn't let me start up from an external drive or reset PRAM or anything...).

I'm going mad trying to figure out what is wrong with this thing, and I have just read how to get a crash-report (although it means nothing to me), so am posting it here.. I hope that's OK....

If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know! I'm posting the last 2 Panic Reports here incase someone can decipher anything.

In the second one (from 21st Oct), I have no peripheral devices attached at all, except my original Apple keyboard and mouse.

In the third one, which happened about half an hour ago, I didn't get a grey veil of death - I just got a load of black-on-white text appear down the screen, which began with "CPU=1 00000001 (corrupt stack)" which sounds ominous.

Is it possible to determine the problem from crash logs like this?

Thanks

Matt

Looks like the log is calling CPU1 the culprit. I'd say you are going to need to try reseating both processors and go from there. If this is something that is beyond your scope of ability, its best to take it to an Apple shop for further help.

I think the issue with the drive corruption was because of the crashes halting all activity to the drive causing the directory structure corruption. Sudden power loses or freeze ups from other hardware halting all activity to the drive are the most common causes of directory structure corruption.

That's the first culprit I'd suspect right there.

Try uninstalling DragThing (and DragThing Helper) and see if that helps. Perhaps it's as simple as upgrading to the latest version if you haven't already, but I would remove that piece of software first and see if it helps.

I see what you mean, but to be honest, looking through the many panic logs I have, that line that starts "BSD process name corresponding to current thread:...." is different every time - it just happens to say DragThing in those two I've included.

I'll try uninstalling DragThing though just in case...

I think it's more likely to be a fault of Processor 1, as Djackmac suggested above, which will be a huge pain it's true.....

Yes, true... there is another member of the forum here that is experiencing one or more CPU failures in a PowerMac G5 -- a search here should point you in the right direction. Perhaps there's some information in that thread or threads that can help you.
