AOL and Gmail in Mac Mail

I am able to receive emails but unable to send them from Mac Mail. I have been using Mac Mail for 5 years with no problems until I had to shut down manually. When I restarted Mail had deleted all my accounts. I added them (AOL and Gmail) and for a few days AOL worked fine but now it won't send messages and Gmail does not work at all... I have checked and tried different settings with various websites but nothing seems to work. Any ideas?

Many thanks,

Chantal

MisterMe will become famous soon enough
This is a well-known issue and is not specific to AOL, Gmail, or Mail. As a security measure, many ISP's block access to foreign SMTP (outgoing mail) servers. Some block it completely. Others block it only on Port 25. As a workaround, you may change your SMTP port from Port 25 to Port 587. If this does not work, then you may use your ISP's SMTP server for your outgoing AOL and Gmail messages. Even though AOL uses IMAP, this works just fine on my ISP.
