    MacBook Battery Not Charging

After a short hospital stay and MacBook not being used for a couple of weeks battery wouldnt charge and computer wouldnt run with battery in.
I purchased a new battery all was fine but once again after computer not being used for 10 days same problem with new battery.
I have followed the reset procedure in the support info. (Holding down power button for 5 sec etc) with power off and battery out but no success.
It works fine plugged in as long as the battery is not installed, but shuts down if battery is installed after the computer is on and wont open if turned on with battery installed.
    Thanks
