iPod: No synching back of the calendar and addressbook?

Hi folks...

I just ordered a Generation 3 30GB iPod, and was wondering about the little phrase in the manual saying that it's only possible to synch the calendar and addressbook TO and not FROM the iPod.
Does this mean that I can't use iPod to synch calendar-files between my macs at home and at the office? I suppose this is because apple wants you to join .Mac which makes it possible to synch your calendar over the internet. I also tried to synch my calendar file with a little terminal-script using my FTP-Server, but it turns out, that apple also shuts this down by making mounted FTP-Volumes read-only ;o((
