man, i broke it again. address book, sync, ichat... all busted.

all of the contacts in my address book disappeared, isync never finishes syncing (It just says "syncing complete" as the little thing spins forever. i have to force quit it), and ichat tells me to enter my information (name , service, aim name and password) and then gives me an internal error and i have to force quit it.

i'm really reliant on these programs and i'm considering reinstalling the OS... but i didn't really want to do that.

    anyone have any ideas?

did it just happen one day? were there any symptoms leading up to this that might have had something to do with it? and what kind of phone do you use, there might be workarounds for the no sync problem. did you try and reinstall isync and ichat? have you gone through all the basic steps?

It sounds like a preference file became corrupted. Can it do the on OS X?

Well before reinstalling the whole OS X, try the OS X 10.2.6 Combo.

Plus, just to see if it is the user account files or the system files, make another user account. Then try address book and experiment. Then you'll know if it a user account file that is busted. Don't panic, this is fixable. Good luck.

i've reinstalled the applications, deleted every pref file that is related to them and still they bug out. i use a t68i.

the first symptom was actually when i ran out of HD space on my computer. once i hit the 260MB part, everything completely wigged out. programs would crash, preferences would reset, etc... i think this is what caused it.

does this really belong in net applications? none of these are net applications (except ichat, but ichat is the least of my worries =) )

I was also used to run out of space some time ago. In this case, all applications get crazy (iTunes tells fatal error, iChat disconnects, prefs files get corrupted, the Finder and Dock drive mad) and the whole system is about to crash, losing a maximum prefs data.

My tactics were: don't touch anything, get in Finder, remove as much useless files as possible (err... MP3s, DIVXs I don't *really*need), then reboot. And it's all okay.

Well, boi, you are the OBM, right?

You should change your title to "Breaker Of Macs: Boi."

And no, this actually belongs in Mac OS X System & Misc. Software.
    Systems:
2.5 GHz MacBook Pro Core 2 Duo, 4 GB RAM, 320 GB hard drive, runs 10.6.8
1.6 GHz iMac G5, 1.5 GB RAM, 120 GB hard drive, runs 10.4.11 (out of commission)

well, check this out. i deleted the preferences to address book and every preference that updated when i added a contact to my now blank address book. nothing. then i reboot.
now everything works fine. ichat works, address book repopulated itself with my old stuff automatically (don't ask how, i don't know) and isync syncs.
so, uh... yeah. i guess i fixed it... something fixed it anyway.

i wish OS X handled a low HD a little better than destroying every program that happens to be open at the time. oh well =)

    thanks everyone
