Cool OS X and older G3s

Hopefully some one can finally answer this question for me... what creates the limitation on the size of your hard drive that OS X can be installed on on older G3s? Ex: The largest hard drive a Wall Street Power Book came with was 8Gbs and, anything larger, needs to be partitioned off as two or more drives. OS 9 never had this limitation... Or... is it something in the machine like the ROM, for instance, that is the limiting factor?

It is in the machine's firmware. That is why it refers only to a few older machines. These machines must be able to boot from within the first 8gb of the drive, and in the case of Mac OS X, the drive booted from must be entirely within that first 8gb. Mac OS 9 got around this because of the way it installed itself onto the machine.
