I got a TDK veloCD burner a year ago when I only ran OS 9. It worked fine if I wanted to copy songs from cds I already owned to burn compilations. Now I run both 9 and X (jaguar), depending on what I need to do on the comp. I've been purchasing music from the iTunes music store with OS X, taking for granted the fact that I would actually be able to burn CD's of the music I paid for. Funny... iTunes can't find my burner or software. When I boot up toast it opens in classic and I'm able to drag files from iTunes to the toast window BUT... it tells me that they aren't music files. iTunes music store isn't using Mp3s anymore!!! (file sharing thievery worries?) I switch the file type on toast to data (even tho I know that means I'll only be able to listen to the CD's on my crappy iMac speakers rather than a stereo). It switches the order of my preferred playlist and STILL WILL NOT FIND MY CD BURNER!!!

I've always been a staunch supporter of mac (I'm a teacher and have a bunch in my classroom) but this incompatability issue has me tinkering with the idea of a PC purchase next time around. I'm not buying a new CD burner... anyone know of a patch or a FREE program I can use to actually burn CD's of the music I paid for?

I'm not sure but I think that the Apple Music Store songs are encoded in AAC format, correct me if I'm wrong.
If so you need to convert them back to mp3's

You can burn Music Store purchases just fine, though the encoded anti-piracy stuff won't allow you to convert to mp3 (at least directly, maybe off of a already-burned CD but that's another issue).
What Mac are you on? You say Toast opens in Classic? Can it open in Jaguar? And can you burn non-Music Store material from Jaguar?
I'm not familiar with that type of CD burner, but if you can get it to burn in Jaguar, you shouldn't have a problem. Do you have any other way to burn a CD? You may need to contact that company and see about compatibility with Jaguar.

Oh, and not to make light of your situation because I'm sure it's bugging the heck out of you, but I did get a small laugh when you say you won't buy a new CD burner, but you might get a PC to replace your Mac.

Ok, according to the tdk website, many of the burners aren't Mac compatible.

The internal veloCD ReWriters are not officially supported on the Mac. The drives haven't been fully tested, nor does it ship with Mac compatible burning software. However, there have been many reports of success with Macs that have an available ATAPI/IDE channel and with Roxio Toast, (not provided). As long as the Mac OS can recognize the drive, it should work with Roxio Toast 5.

The external FireWire veloCD ReWriters are Mac compatible, and are supported for use on Macintosh. They ship with Mac compatible software, (Toast), and have been tested with Macs.

The external USB veloCD ReWriters are not officially supported on the Mac. The drives haven't been fully tested, nor does it ship with Mac compatible burning software. There have been reports of the drive working as a writer under OS X using Roxio Toast 5.1.x and later, but the drive is currently unsupported on a Mac.

We suggest you use iTunes to play MP3 files and arrange them into play lists and use Toast to burn your CDs. When you are ready to burn a CD, simply select all the songs you want and drag and drop them onto the Toast audio window. Toast will automatically convert the files into standard Red Book audio format and burn them to CD without any loss in audio quality.

Apple has made some changes in Jaguar that affect how SCSI drives are recognized. After installing Mac OS 10.2, it is possible the operating system will no longer see your drive as a CD recorder, only as CD player. Toast depends on the driver information from the operating system to determine the capabilities of a drive, and as such, will only see the drive as a CD player. You will not be able to record discs with Toast. As this is a Mac OS 10.2 issue, it affects recording through DiscBurner and iTunes as well. Apple has released an update to Jaguar (10.2.1). In addition to other changes, they have addressed some issues related to SCSI recorders.

OK, so now I'll ask what version of Jaguar are you running? It could be as simple as updating to the latest version (don't forget to repair permissions right after). See if that is applicable and works for you.
