Adium 2.0 (alpha) is out thwre.

The initial release of Adium 2.0 will bring support for the following protocols:

AOL® Instant Messenger™ (via TOC2 Protocol)
Key Features:
• Works with AIM, AOL, and @Mac.com names.
• Full server-side contact list support
• Buddy is typing notifications
• Unicode messaging (Adium to Adium only)
• Profiles and profile viewing

AOL® Instant Messenger™ (via IMServices Framework)
Key Features:
• Works with AIM, AOL, and @Mac.com names.
• Server-side contact list support (No group support)
• Buddy is typing notifications
• Full Unicode messaging
• Away message viewing

yeah, I tried it way back (much hasn't changed, since Adam's busy being a student). It's not really as usable as 1.63 (or whatever the current version is) is now.
