Is it me? or does font book stink?

Font Book is really driving me nuts. I have a cd rom with a few thousand fonts on it... it doesn't really provide a way (that I can tell) to preview them before installing them.
Also, there are fonts on my system that are not in font book. If I open photoshop, I have a bunch of fonts in the pull down that aren't anywhere to be found in font book.

I have 277 files in /Library/Fonts and only 80 entries under "All Fonts" in font book. What gives??

Font Book is supposed to be a basic font management application along the lines of iMovie and iPhoto. If you need really good management, you should invest in a better (and costlier) program, such as Font Reserve or Suitcase.
