Best backup options; RAID?

I have a 60GB main drive. I really haven't made any backups for it. I wanted to know what will be the best way to backup the drive. If the main drive fails, I want it to be as painless as possible to get back up and running again. Is there backup software that will periodically (weekly, monthly, etc) backup all the data to a secondary drive?

Originally I was thinking that it would be easiest to install a drive of the same capacity and create a mirrored RAID. But after reading This thread it looks like I wouldn't be able to boot from a RAID, and I would also have to backup and erase my main drive before mirroring it.

A $5.00 shareware program called Carbon Copy Cloner will do this very well.
