iDVD, G5 and Panther: Crash, crash, hang, crash

Anyone else have this experience? I absolutely cannot burn a dvd using iDVD in under Panther. I'd done it once before in Jag and it worked ok. I import a short movie (2 minutes), leave the menu stuff as default, and say burn. System crash (no panic message, just total freeze-up - even cmd-opt-esc doesn't do anything). Try again from another user account, and it hangs, then when I kill it the system freezes. Try again & the system freezes.

It's a fresh install of iDVD from iLife disk, then did the same after software update's latest iDVD today, latest Panther (10.3.1), dual 2.0 G5 with 3.5G ram, no funky software installed.

Advice would be greatly appreciated.
