Installed Panther, what to do with . . .

. . . Classic. I warn you of my nooB abilities. I have completed the upgrade where I came straight outta classic into the 21st century.

I am now running all of my daily applications on Panther and would like to know what I do with all of the app's and junk taking up space in my Classic environment. I have recently driven my hard drive down to about 5GB and I think I could free up a lot of use(less) space.

How do I go about deleting certain applications and their related extentions efficiently? Spring Cleaning (OS9)? All that I would like to keep in classic is my Ethernet settings, Entourage, Toast and GConverter. Even when I was soley running classic I had difficulty deleting extentions (which did not elude to their parent) for fear of having to reload the app.

I'm assuming by GConverter, you mean Graphic Converter?

You know if you're only keeping Classic for Toast and Graphic Converter, there are Carbon versions of these apps that will run natively under OS X...

Most programs that install files in the system folder do have names related. To identify extensions and what they do, use the Extension manager in OS 9. The bottom of that screen will give you more information (you might have to click on the arrow at the bottom to extend the window).

The programs you can safely trash.

I now run panther 10.3 and would like to completely trash OS 9 folder is this possible ?

Yes, you can just trash the OS 9 System folder and any applications, but you won't be able to use Classic after that.

If you are sure you will never need or want OS 9/Classic, just drag the System Folder with the 9 on it to the trash. Then drag the Applications(Mac OS9) to the trash. the short cut Desktop (Mac OS9) can be trashed also.

Problem I get a message that its required by the system all my old apps have gone just the OS9 folder around 500mbs any ideas appreciated

have you deselected the folder from your classic prefs? if that's not it, try using BatchMod on the folder and it's contents.
