I may be crazy, or not?

I re-partitioned my HD and did a fresh install of Panther without enabling journaling. This a less than 1 month old PB (see sig) I did this to try out YDL but alas it's a no go. Anyway now my Panther seems way more snappier and responsive than before. Could this be just because of the journaling being turned off? One other thing I noticed is a lot of crap like trial stuff isn't there anymore, I didn't wan't any of it anyway. I'm wondering if this was actually a fresh Panther install from the factory or a written over Jaguar to save time? How would one know? Either way I'm glad I decided to do this because I'm much happier with the way my Powerbook runs.

Im not sure if journaling has anything to do with your new-found-speed, if anything it should speed things up for you like fsck's at boot.

My iMac800 where i did a fresh install of panther is faster then my iBook which came loaded with panther. I wonder if you ar right about the panther written over jaguar idea. Is there a way to check how panter was installed?

Not as far as I know. Journaling would probably be ever so slightly slower because of having to continually update the journal, but overall, it's better, especially during startup, because the OS doesn't have to scan the disk so much if, for example, the computer was shut down wrong.

Maybe it's just preceived, I know the first thing I do when I buy or repair a PC is re-partition and format the drive whether it needs it or not to get rid of all the factory junk that does nothing more than slow down a machine. Plus to start a new with fresh shiat. Then you know what's there and what isn't.

I'll tell ya, a USB or Firewire drive is indespensible for this kind of stuff. I can loose everything on my Book and think nothing of it, everything I need is backed up all the time. I suppose a network drive would work but an external drive is way faster (just stating the obvious here)

That's part of the reason I'm getting an iPod
